4 popular Christmas myths debunked

Was the real Santa thin? Did Coca-Cola marketers invent him? Are Christmas trees pagan? Are poinsettias toxic? We've got answers to your burning holiday questions.

With its rich and complex history, the celebration of Christmas didn’t just happen (or not happen in Boston in the mid-1600s) overnight. It has slowly evolved over the years. Whether you view Christmas as a day of religious observance, a consumer-driven secular federal holiday or a customized hybrid of the two, there are a few things that should be set straight before Dec. 25 (not the day Jesus was actually born) hits.

Below, we examine four popular myths regarding the history and appearance of Santa Claus (and Coca-Cola’s supposed involvement in his development), the religious significance of Christmas trees and purportedly deadly holiday décor.

1. Will the real Santa Claus please stand up?
Santa Claus — aka Father Christmas aka Kris Kringle — is generally perceived to be a convivial and obese elderly gentleman perpetually clad in a red, fur-lined suit that eschews conventional airline travel for a team of magical reindeer. However, the real Santa Claus is a far cry from the fantastical pop culture icon that slowly emerged in North America in the 19th century and has stuck around ever since.
The jocund and loveable Santa Claus that sits around in North American shopping malls soliciting photo-ops is derived from the legend of Sinterklaas, an also hirsute and charitable (but at times sinister, depending on the folklore of what country you’re in) figure from The Netherlands whose ensemble consists of a red cape, flowing bishop’s robes, mitre and crosier. Sinterklaas gets around on a grey horse, not a sleigh, and is assisted by candy-tossing, politically incorrect Zwarte Pieten (Black Pete) and not industrious elves. And when not making seasonal appearances in The Netherlands, Sinterklaas is said to reside in Spain, not the North Pole or the Finnish Lapland.
Sinterklaas himself is based on Saint Nicholas, or Nikolaos of Myra, the patron saint of Amsterdam, sailors and children. Saint Nicholas, whose life is celebrated on Dec. 6 and who is an actual historical figure revered in Christianity, is depicted to look even less like the Americanized Santa than the Dutch Sinterklaas. That is, he isn’t heavyset and he doesn’t have a predilection for red-and-white outerwear. He’s Greek, thin and looks pretty much like most other saints. And not to confuse things more, but Odin, the Norse god who rode a flying horse, also plays a major part in Santa mythology.
2. Diet Santa Claus?
Now that we know that Santa Claus emerged in the 19th century as an Americanized take on a Dutch folklore legend that’s based on a gift-giving Greek saint and a Norse god (phew), you might wonder who “invented” the modern-day Santa Claus that we know and love. The answer: it wasn’t Coca-Cola.
According to urban legend, Santa Claus first emerged wearing red and white, which just happen to be Coke’s corporate colors, during seasonal Coca-Cola ad campaigns in the 1930s. Sure, these illustrations helped to cement Santa’s sartorial preferences, but Santa had been depicted wearing similar clothing for several decades prior. Illustrator Thomas Nast is frequently credited as having helped shape the modern “fat and jolly” image of Santa in the late 1800s while Norman Rockwell had been churning out iconic Santa imagery for The Saturday Evening Post since 1923.
3. Gathering around the pagan pine
It’s convenient to think that Christmas trees have forever been a Christian tradition. The truth is, tree decorating — but not the cutting down of live trees — is a thoroughly pagan pastime that ruffled more than a few feathers when it was adopted by the church. In fact, the first decorated Christmas tree didn’t emerge until the 19th century.
Long before Christmas trees became associated with the birth of Jesus, evergreens were believed to hold supernatural powers and were worshipped by pagans during winter solstice rituals. Because of this, many fundamentalists throughout history have rejected the concept of pagan “tree worship” including the pilgrims. Even today, many groups oppose Christmas trees — and Christmas itself — because of pagan associations. Other popular Christmas fixtures such as Yule logs, mistletoe, holly and mincemeat pies can also be traced back to pagan rituals.
4. Poinsettia panic
Like Christmas trees, holly, mistletoe and other “pagan plants,” poinsettias have long been used to inject festive, flora-based flair into homes during the holidays. It has also long been believed that the leaves of these beautiful red plants from Mexico are poisonous when ingested by humans. This is simply not true as poinsettias are nontoxic to humans and animals.
Still, eating a poinsettia isn’t the wisest idea as doing so may result in the same effects as drinking two too many glasses of spiked eggnog: an upset stomach and possible vomiting. The poinsettias-will-kill-you myth is believed to have started in 1918 when a child in Hawaii was falsely believed to have died from poinsettia poisoning.
Not only are poinsettias not deadly but they’re also believed to be one of numerous houseplants that are effective in absorbing pollutants for improved indoor air quality.

Willie Nelson Put in Slammer for Drugs

Willie Nelson Put in Slammer for Drugs

by William DoscherSaturday, November 27 2010
Country music legend Willie Nelson was arrested on Black Friday for possession of marijuana. Making his way from California to Austin, US Border Patrol officials found six ounces of pot on his tour bus in Sierra Blanca, Texas. The officers reportedly smelled the substance, found it, and jailed Nelson and two others.
According to ABC local station KVIA, Nelson was released after posting the $2,500 bond shortly afterwords. Nelson has been pinched for drugs in the past, notably in 2006 when he was charged with a misdemeanor for possession of a pound-and-a-half of weed and mushrooms, landing him a hefty fine and six months probation.
Nelson did not comment on the arrest. The 77-year-old will be performing a live concert at the Austin City Limits in Austin, Texas this February

DJ's that make me say WTF

I spoke to a young DJ this morning playing a club in Jax and what he said made no sense to me he only plays what you pay him to play if you pay him then he is an open Jukebox well the  club pays him to DJ so he is an open Jukebox for the club to keep it's patrons happy and he complained about playing songs he does not like people request or he Tell's them point blank no.

The patrons are the ones spending the money to pay for not only the alcohol but also to pay the entertainment as a DJ you are not a musical god you are a DJ you play requests unless of course you are some big time morning show DJ then I guess you do what ever you want to do. I know sometimes playing the bars and clubs I can be a little in your face and I am not for everyone but I do play requests if you ask for it and I have it and it wont offend anyone or get me shot I will play it and you do not have to tip me to play it, but if you feel the urge I don't mind tips. I guess when you just play one Genre of music Industrial you do not have to play requests. I would hate to be trapped to one type of music I love it all and believe a good or even great DJ has a love for all music not just what you like to listen to.

But again just the rantings of a mobile DJ

Do It Yourself Wedding Uplighting

Do It Yourself Wedding Uplighting

Do It Yourself Wedding Uplighting
Uplighting is a great way to create depth, interest, and drama for your event by literally painting your event space with light. You can turn an ordinary boxy event space into a truly unique and vibrant entertaining space.
Uplighting is one of the most cost effective ways to decorate for your special event.
Often it makes sense to hire a company to do this for you, but if you have a do-it-yourself streak, here is a basic guide, list of materials, and places to buy the lights required to create do it yourself uplighting.

Do It Yourself Uplighting is Great For...

If you have a smaller event, know the specific effect you are going for, have a lot of friends to help, and don't mind buying and storing bulky equipment, doing it yourself might be a great option. The biggest costs associated with most uplighting jobs are equipment, labor, and insurance. Doing it yourself can cut down on those costs.

Do It Yourself Uplighting is Not a Good Idea For...

If you have a large room (greater than 30x30), don't have a place to store all the equipment, don't have the time or patience to learn about lighting, or need any more variables on a very hectic day of your life where everything needs to be perfect:) While it may seem easy enough, the unknown, things breaking and not functioning correctly is almost a given for any event. If you aren't ok dealing with that, it might make sense to hire a special event lighting company.

do it yourself uplighting

Types of Lights
There are basically two types of uplights, PAR cans and LED lights. This article we'll focus on traditional PAR cans.

PAR Cans

"PAR Cans" have been the standard to create uplighting. PAR stands for Parabolic Aluminized Reflector, each light has a high powered light bulb in front of a reflector or mirror that concentrates the light. They are sold in various sizes indicated by their opening size. Par 64, Par 56, Par 48, Par 36 are common sizes. If you take the number of the light divided by 8, you get the light diameter.
These are bright white lights. To give them color you need a "gel' or colored plastic film placed over the light, held in a frame.
Traditional PAR Can lighting Pros:
  • Cheap
  • Easy setup
  • Basic knowledge required to setup and use, just plug in
  • Easy to find, almost always in stock
Traditional PAR Can lighting Cons:
  • Very hot, a burning smell generally occurs the first time you use them. If new, leave them on for a couple of hours before your event so they won't smell day of (in a well ventilated room)
  • Colors limited to the gels used
  • Can't control brightness dynamically without dimmer controllers (extra cost)
  • Bulbs burnout, break, pop, fizzle
  • Need adequate space to setup
  • Need outlets nearby each fixture
  • Need multiple circuits to run many lights
PAR Can Packages
We've put together a few PAR can packages for options, we've included links where you can buy each package they include just about everything you need to get started. They are listed strongest to weakest in for light output.

PAR 64 Package - The second best uplighting light. Everything you need to get started, this is suited for large rooms or where you need a lot of light.

PAR 56 Package - This is the best uplighting light. A great uplighting package, good amount of light, not too overpowering, and a good size.
American DJ PAR 56 Package Black

PAR 36 Package - Good for targeted, focused lighting, does not provide large washes but is very compact. Think of a high powered flashlight; a narrow, intense beam of light (not a general wash of color or light). Produces a good amount of light, appropriate for small parties or highlighting parts of the room (cake, plants, ice sculpture lighting.)

 Uplighting Bases
Uplighting bases hold the light upright and keep them from tipping over. You need to have these to do any kind of uplighting, otherwise your very hot light will tip over and not stand up.
These bases can be hard to find, we've found you can buy uplighting basses through Amazon. You screw the bottom of the par can into the base using the arm that is included with PAR can light and the bases stabilize the light so it can stay adequately cooled and upright.
Another option is to make your own out of plywood, screws and bolts. It can be time consuming so it may make sense to buy these instead of creating them yourself. Depends on the amount of time you would want to put in.

Extension Cords

For each light plan on getting a 15ft-25ft extension cord. Black is the best color as it hides and blends into most carpets. Grab a few power strips and extra cords just to be safe.E-Cords Extension Cord Standard Ends 16 Gauge 25 Foot

Florida Wedding Reception Mobile DJ Services

A wedding reception is a party held after the completion of a marriage ceremony. It is held as hospitality for those who have attended the wedding, hence the name reception: the couple receives society, in the form of family and friends, for the first time as a married couple. Hosts provide their choice of food and drink, although a wedding cake is popular. Entertaining guests after a wedding ceremony is traditional in most societies, and can last anywhere from half an hour to many hours or even days.
Bride & Groom first Dance Song Suggestions: The wedding first dance between the bride and groom
Bride and Father dance suggestion (also known as Father Daughter Dance Songs) Song Suggestions

Groom And Mother Dance Song Suggestions
(Also Known As Mother Son Dance)

Bridal Party Dance Suggestions
: The dance including the Bride & Groom, Bridesmaids & Groomsmen, and family members.
Bouquet Toss Song Suggestions: The practice of the tossing the bridal bouquet is believed to be an outgrowth of an idea that was popular in the 14th century, particularly in early French tradition.
Garter Toss Song Suggestions: Today, the tradition of the wedding  garter is tame in comparison to France of the 14th century. In North America, the bride wears two garters; one as a keepsake garter and the other for the throw away.

Wedding Cake Cutting Song Suggestions: The cutting of the cake is a tradition that occurs during the reception. The bride and groom cut the cake together and the groom feeds a piece to the bride and then the bride feeds the groom. After this little ceremony, the guests are served.

How to Dress for a Wedding Reception

Knowing how to dress for a wedding reception is important. If you're dressed too fancy or not fancy enough, you're going to stand out like a sore thumb. That's not the kind of lasting impression you want to leave on your fellow guests or the happy couple. Unless you're the bride or groom, it pays to learn how to dress for a wedding reception before you attend one.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

  1. Pay attention to the invitation. If it indicates anything like formal dress or black tie, then you know you need to dress to the nines for this event. This means a tuxedo or suit and tie for men and full-length dresses or ball gowns for women.
  2. Take your cue from the venue of the reception. If the reception is going to be outside, you can usually get away with more casual clothing than if the reception will be in a formal ballroom.
  3. Refrain from going too casual, unless the invitation specifically requests jeans and t-shirts. You're still attending a wedding, after all. Even the more laid-back outdoor venues require a degree of decorum. Business casual dress, such as khakis and polo shirts, are about as casual as you should go.
  4. Avoid colors that are too loud and patterns that are too wild. Either one of these things will make you stand out in a bad way.
  5. Keep the weather in mind. You should choose clothing that's appropriate to the season in order to be as comfortable as possible. Be sure to also check the weather report the day of the wedding, so you'll know if you should wear a coat or bring an umbrella.
  6. Find out what other guests will be wearing. If you can match your style of dress to that of other people who will be attending the reception, you will rarely go wrong.
  7. Ask the bride or groom what you should wear. This method is fool proof. It should also be used as a last resort, unless you're very close with either member of the happy couple. However, if the invitation doesn't give you any clues and the other guests aren't talking to you, then this is your best option.
